Periods in Abbreviations

As requested, I will talk about punctuation in abbreviations. The rule of thumb is if the abbreviation makes a word, it should have periods; otherwise, it shouldn’t. For example, Most U.S. citizens live in the USA. Since “US” spells “us,” it gets periods, but there is no word “usa,” so “USA” doesn’t need periods.

    Thank you for doing this particular LTotD for me, I appreciate it! Also, I wanted to come and leave a *real* comment on your site, since I keep forgetting to. The “making of another word” reasoning seems logical and sensible. I’ll try to use that as a way to remember.
